Is your school not coming to the theatre? Why not?!
Is it that you think it’s too pricey? Is it because you don’t feel you know where to find out about us? Or perhaps you’d love a theatre visit, but how can the theatre possibly meet your curriculum needs?! Well, we can definitely help!
‘the Kings is the best choice in Portsmouth’
– Sam Johnston, Assistant Headmaster (Charter Academy)
Here at Kings, we don’t just host shows to provide entertainment but we actively want you to engage with what we’re putting on! This theatre’s on your doorstep, why not learn to love it?
We offer a huge range of curriculum-enhancing workshops, not just for drama but for a huge range of subject areas (Science or Creative Writing, anyone?). These workshops are a hands-on way of learning and are made to inspire! These can often be linked with what you’re currently studying, such as looking at animal movements within a Role Play Workshop, or how light works within a technical theatre workshop. We can arrange ‘Q&A’ sessions with the cast after the show in which you can ask questions (or just have a chat!) about key issues raised by the show you’ve just watched, or the research behind creating the show. You should also look out for the new season education packs on our website! These are great accompaniments to our shows that include worksheets and lesson plans that offer advice on how to build on the show you’ve just seen and relate it to the curriculum and its needs.
The theatre is an engaging, interactive environment in which kinaesthetic learners flourish. And we think it’s also a hugely inspiring place, and not just because of those on stage! Backstage crew, arts administration members and our Box Office team are key areas that need a work force, and theatre visits can introduce students to career possibilities that they may never have considered.
‘they can give students the experience they require to develop in the future’
- Sue Beckett, Head of Portsmouth Music Service, Portsmouth Music Hub
We know cost is a constant concern for schools, but that is why you should support your local theatre. Supporting local theatres, rather than visiting the West End cuts down on travel costs, and often tickets are significantly cheaper! Our ticket prices do vary, and contacting us is always advisable as special group discounts can be applied for school bookings. So, you can get you visit tailor made to your needs, and it doesn’t have to be expensive...
As for not knowing where to find information, well that is what we’re here for! Our education team are more than happy to come and visit you and discuss your needs. Or if you have any questions or queries about what we can do for you, or any suggestions about how we could help you engage with us further, or even if you want to let us know what else is stopping you from getting involved, we would love to hear from you! Give us a call or send us an email!
